What is Ortho Evra?
Ortho Evra is a highly popular form of birth control
that was introduced to consumers after FDA approval in November of 2001.
Both its popularity and potentially dangerous effects are linked to
the unique way the drug is administered.
Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Inc., the maker of Ortho
Evra, marketed the product heavily based on the convenience
of the patch. A one-and-three-quarter inch patch is worn on the body
for three consecutive weeks and removed for the fourth week, allowing
the woman to have a menstrual period. The patient is able to wear the
patch for a week at a time before replacing it. This is supposed to
prevent missing a daily contraceptive and, in turn, decrease the risk
of becoming pregnant.
Unlike the birth control pill, the patch steadily dispenses
estrogen into the bloodstream. Most patches are composed of three layers
and include a seal, a medication compartment, and the adhesive back
that attaches to the skin of the patient. While pill users experience
a spike in estrogen levels after taking it, patch users are exposed
for a prolonged period of time. Despite the convenience of Ortho
Evra, the increased risks for health problems have caused many
to reconsider their choice of birth control.
When the drug initially entered the market, the company
failed to recognize the patient's high level of exposure to estrogen.
Compared to oral birth control which has 35 micrograms of estrogen,
Ortho Evra dispenses 60 percent more to the user because
of the way the hormones are transmitted. More of the chemicals are retained
in the body when the patch is used, while excess estrogen is more effectively
disposed of by pill users. For many women, the higher estrogen level
in the patch has resulted in blood clots, strokes, heart attacks, pulmonary
embolism, and deep vein thrombosis. There are now Ortho
Evra lawsuits underway for those who have suffered serious side
effects.
